My Review: 5/5Well, Angela Marsons has done it again. Just when I thought there was no way she could keep the Kim Stone series going, she has surpassed my expectations. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is by FAR the BEST detective/crime series I have ever read. Book Six does not disappoint.
While this one was not my favorite Kim Stone book, it is still phenomenal. Dead Souls is darker than the other five books, as it touches on a subject that unfortunately is all too real in today's world: hate crime. While no murder or crime is 'nicer' than another, hate crime seems to make less sense than other crimes. To endure violence upon someone else just because of who they are as a person is inexcusable and downright despicable. Ms. Marsons does an AWESOME job of addressing this issue, and not in a preachy way.
This book has Kim working on a case in a neighboring jurisdiction. We learn more of her past (which I just LOVE), and see how her team functions without her. Every one of the books dives deeper into a member of Kim's team. This time it's Stacey, the computer 'geek'. She is a heavy-set, black woman who has struggled her entire life with being ridiculed. When she dives into a separate case on her own, the consequences put her in unpredictable danger.
I seriously cannot praise this book enough. This is not for the faint of heart. Parts were so incredibly horrifying, I found myself staying up late at night just to see what happens.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book, as well as all of the other Kim Stone books. Great job, Angela Marsons!!

Dead Souls Detective Kim Stone Crime Thriller Series Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Angela Marsons Jan Cramer Bookouture Books Reviews
Angela Matson says this was her most difficult novel to write. Maybe that is why she knocked it out of the ballpark. We can understand killing for money, killing for revenge, or fear, or sex, or even for love, but what motivates a person to hate an innocent person because of their skin color, religion, ethic origin, even to kill. This novel is timely. It seems that with the turn of political rhetoric of the day those who hate are being given a license to hate. Each day some who hate are liberated to let their hate bring forth the fruit of death. Kim Stone and her team face this ugliness, determined to not allow such deadly hate continue on their turf.
First of all, I became a fan of Angela Marsons after reading her very first novel introducing protagonist DI Kim Stone. The antisocial no-nonsense (and certainly emotionally damaged) female detective is at once intriguing, intense, and above all else a relentless avenger of the underdog and the victimized.
Kim Stone is simply put, one of those unforgettable characters a reader happens upon very seldom. A strong female champion of right, armed with a badge and a bike, driven relentlessly forward by her own demons. Yes, I was immediately hooked after my first introduction.
I was well...amazed by the gripping take-no-prisoners writing and absolutely couldn't put her novels down...I consumed each of Kim's adventures, and each novel left me yearning and eagerly awaiting the next book. I might have been partial to Evil Games and Bloodlines because of the psychological angle and the narcissistic sociopath antagonist Kim faced off against in these two thrillers. But...I loved them all and would have awarded 10 stars if I could have done so.
This book (DEAD SOULS)...it did not grab hold and not let go (like all of the others). In fact, I found it to be a more than a little difficult to get vested, and I didn't feel like I was fully on board the train until well into the book. The conspicuous absence of Stone was a major contributor but the chapters weaving back and forth between timelines and the different characters was somewhat off-putting. Perhaps the most dominant feature of this book that worried me was where the author MIGHT be taking the topic of "hate crimes"...thankfully when all was said and done I did not feel that the writer was making a personal argument or indicting a particular political persuasion.
Finally, I was grateful for the author's notes that were penned at the end of the novel. She explained her motivations for the variations I found to be inconsistent with the earlier books and I understood her rationale fully. It WAS refreshing in many ways to see Kim "out of her element" and dealing with the challenges she faced. It WAS fantastic to get to know (in particular) Dawson and Stacey better. Angela Marsons is a "master of the game", and I am on board for this brilliant new talent all the way!!!
A huge thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Angela Marsons for an advanced copy of this ebook for an honest review.
I'm totally awestruck by Ms. Marsons writing. This series gets better with every installment written. There are just not enough words in the English language to praise Angela Marsons and the wonderful Kim Stone series.
After the sixth installment I will be anxiously waiting for book seven. Of course, this book had all the excitement I've come to expect but around the 80% mark my heart was pounding and I couldn't read fast enough to get to the end.
This was once again one heck of a thrill ride from beginning to end. I can't stress enough what you are missing out on if you haven't been reading this series. What are you waiting for? I guarantee you won't be able to stop once you have started.
